Interim Critique Thursday 14th May 2009

This was an intensive session with a strong sense of direction. There were evidence of ideas developing towards new paths - all derived from the initial ideas on site at the end of April. Furthermore, the progress has become more vibrant, energetic and expressive - less careful than at first. Remember that your work need this fuel - it needs to go through a range of experiments before you can start final design visuals and 3D models.

Great to see so much video. This was sophisticated and well proportioned to the ideas presented. There were interesting topics coming through in discussion - human behaviour, perception and questioning of how we use space. There was also a good mix of serious and humorous issues. Very enjoyable session, well done everyone. Please let me know how you feel you have developed and what particular aspects of this slightly abstract project has been positive for you. Of course, also let me know what has been difficult etc.,

Next week you will present the work as a complete set of ideas, concepts, diagrams, CAD, sketches, photographs, still images, video footage, text, poetry, models - linking it to the site - make sure it reflects your idea and process throughout... (P R O C E S S = continuous action, operation, or series of changes taking place in a definite manner (www.dictionary.com)). You know about process - but always good to have a reminder......

Nimisha, Domestic Mapping

Sinead, filmstrip

Amanda, sketchbooks

Think of a process timeline - it doesn't necessarily have to be in that order ("I like a film to have a beginning, middle and end - but not necessarily in that order.." Jean-Luc Godard) - you are in charge and will decide what goes where. Have a look at the way some of the artists we discussed (in relation to your projects) do their work - based in galleries or relative spaces (Sophie Calle (mimicking, following), Derek Jarman (film, colour, sea/Dungeness), Pipilotti Rist (performance, audio/visual, site specific), Damien Hirst (Spin Paintings) ..etc.,

Enjoy the process, take risks..

"I acknowledge -
I evoke the memories
I submit to the agony
I salute the power
Pride - that by which mankind lives - not arrogance
not personal pride - or social elevation
That ripeness of experience
when fruits become the seed"
'I salute my love' - from Martha Graham's notebooks
